Augusta Frances East, wife of Sir Henry Ainslie Hoare (1824–1894), 5th Baronet, was a friend of the artist. Leighton painted her in Paris when he was only 28. It is a sombre portrait. She is standing in a garden next to an orange tree, she is possibly in mourning and is wearing all black except for the red roses in her hair. Her husband's uncle had died the year before, leaving him as the successor to the baronetcy.
