This scene was painted on the home farm at Wembury, near Plymouth. It shows an early Hornsby mechanical reaper and binder. In most places in England two horses were sufficient to tow the binder, but on the steeply sloping fields of South Devon three- or four-horse teams were a regular sight. This picture was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1914.

Maud Hogarth Clay was one of three daughters of Dr Robert Clay and a direct descendant of William Hogarth the artist. After developing a spinal disease she continued to paint but chose her subjects close to Wembury.
