Arthur Jeffress was an art dealer and close friend of Graham Sutherland. This picture was painted in Venice where Jeffress had a holiday home. Sutherland described Jeffress as ‘ romantic, even exotic, the physical character of his countenance with its warm brown colouring reminded one strongly of the faces of certain figures in the paintings of Eugene Delacroix’.
