Arthur Phear (1867–1959) worked at several London hospitals throughout his career, including the Metropolitan Hospital, the Royal Free Hospital, the Royal Chest Hospital and the Queen Alexandra Military Hospital. During the First World War Phear was a consulting physician to the British Salonika Forces and the Army of the Black Sea. Although Malaria was rampant and typhoid epidemics were frequent, Phear continued to work and in 1919 was awarded the CB. He had a reputation as an excellent clinical teacher, and was interested in the position of women in medicine. He helped change the bye-law which admitted women as fellows of the Royal College of Physicians, London, of which he was a member. Phear’s main hobby was music, and he was an outstanding pianist.
