Folding fan, the leaf painted by Australian-born artist and tastemaker, Thea Proctor. Having completed her education at the Sydney Art School, Proctor relocated to London in 1903 to undertake further studies at the St John’s School of Art. She remained in London till 1921 (excluding a brief return to Australia from 1912–1914) and exhibited works at the Royal Academy and New English Art Club. Her style was essentially decorative and inspired by the Avant Gard aesthetics and fashions of the Ballet Russe and Chelsea Arts Club balls. Throughout her life, Proctor painted and sketched designs for fans, a sizable collection of which is held by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australia.
