Originally from Ireland, Deirdre Nelson has been based in Glasgow since her graduation from the Glasgow School of Art in 1992. Her work crosses boundaries between traditional craft and contemporary art, often a 'humorous commentary on social and textile history'. She is interested in the movement associated with hand skills, particularly sewing and knitting. This interest has led to projects focusing on the history of textile production, in Scotland and Australia, and how this history interacted with the social fabric of the communities involved. She says: 'Research, humour and craft technique allow me to deal with relevant social and environmental issues whilst engaging communities in the process.'
