The Scheemakers was commissioned by Lord Burlington for his villa at Chiswick.
The male figure stands, his left arm leaning on the tree stump from which a quiver hangs. His left hand holds a small object and his right arm rests on top of his head. His face is delicate, accentuated by hair which is arranged in an Apollo’s Knot. He has the undeveloped, physique of an adolescent.
The Apollo de Medici is a Roman version of Greek Apollo Lykeios attributed to Praxiteles, originally located in an Athenian gymnasium. Representations on Athenian coins show the Greek statue held a bow in the left hand, whereas Roman and eighteenth-century copies only retain the bow’s grip.
