The sitter was a senior neurologist at St George's Hospital. This bust was accepted by the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, 1970. Stephen Dyonis Elek, the artist, was emeritus professor of medical microbiology in the University of London and honorary consulting bacteriologist to St George’s Hospital. He started the 'Journal of Medical Microbiology'. His interests spanned not only bacteriology, immunology and virology but also the arts, the law and business. He was an international authority on staphylococcus.
