Munter travelled to Scandinavia during the First World War with Kandinsky but in 1917 he returned to Russia where he married Nina Andrewsky which greatly disappointed Munter. During this period, Munter created paintings focusing on women and interiors, many suggesting a mood of thoughtful contemplation. She painted this portrait in 1917 of Anna Roslund-Agaard (1891–1941) who was an author and musician, the sister of Nell Waldens and married to the Danish painter Carl Trier.
