Ann was the fourth child and eldest daughter of Sir John Harrison of Balls Park, Ware, and Margaret Fanshawe, who was the daughter of Robert Fanshawe of Dronfield. Ann and the rest of the family joined her father with Charles I in Oxford in 1643, where she met her second cousin, Richard Fanshawe. They married on 18th May 1644 and went on to have 14 children.

The memoirs of Lady Ann Fanshawe have become a key firsthand account of aristocratic life during the English Civil War, and of experiences at the courts in Portugal and Spain. Ann wrote them for her only surviving son, Richard, who was only a few months old when his father died, documenting not only his family’s experiences, but also chronicling the family history of the early Fanshawes.
