A commemorative plaque comprising a roundel and an inscription. The roundel features a portrait of William III, an East Indiaman ship, and a building. The plaque was unveiled in 1988 in the presence of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands to commemorate three centuries of Anglo-Dutch naval friendship. 1688 was the year of the 'Glorious Revolution' when the Protestant William of Orange arrived in England with his wife Mary to displace the unpopular Catholic James II, and so became king and queen. This brought the two Protestant countries closer together.
