The right wing of a triptych, probably that described in the 1516 and 1524 inventories of Margaret of Austria as having a central panel depicting a small Pietà by ‘Rogier’ (van der Weyden), with side panels by ‘Master Hans’, each showing an angel, with an Annunciation in grisaille on the exterior. It exhibits Memling’s smooth analytical naturalism with the figure placed like a living column against an uncharacteristically archaic gold background. The angularity and asceticism of the figure betray the influence of Van der Weyden while its elegance recalls German painting and Memling’s early training in the Rhine area.
