Born in Tredegar, Monmouthshire, 'Nye' Bevan was elected Labour MP for Ebbw Vale from 1929 to 1960, and became the South Wales miners' spokesman. He was founder and, from 1942 to 1945, editor of the left-wing weekly 'Tribune'. As Minister for Health and Housing from 1945 to 1951, Bevan guided the National Health Service Act through Parliament in 1946 and oversaw its implementation in the National Health Service in 1948 with nationalised hospitals and free medical treatment for all.
