Although the artist states that this picture was painted at Canonbie, the bridge closely resembles Penton Bridge over the Liddel Water. The painting was commissioned by Joe Taylor, a wealthy local businessman. He and Alexander Reid were partners of a large woollen mill in Langholm. In the painting Taylor can be seen in the foreground. Bough has painted himself in the background looking on. Otter hunting was a popular sport. Otters were hunted for their fur and regarded as a pest, competing with fishermen for their fish. Otter hunting with hounds was banned in the 1960s.
