Scenes of buying and selling were a favoured subject for artists and collectors in seventeenth-century Dutch art. Not only did they afford the artist an opportunity to display his ability to evoke material textures in paint, in much the same way as still-life painting, but they also indirectly re-affirmed the key role of commerce in society: a view very much in keeping with the mercantile values of the northern Netherlands at this date.
