This painting and 'A Peasant carrying a Rod over his Shoulder' were probably painted as a pair, like a number of similar studies by Teniers, which were sometimes made in sets and pairs. This painting was originally painted on panel, like its companion, but was transferred to canvas by the restorer, Bauquin, in 1785.
