The regimental identification of this informal portrait rests on the numeral ‘13’ in the centre of the shoulder belt plate and the buff facing colour. This, combined with the gold lace, was the correct combination for the Thirteenth Regiment of Native Infantry in the Army of the Bombay Presidency. The 13th (Bombay) Native Infantry is listed in the East India Register from 1825, but it was not involved in any major action until the Indian Mutiny (1857–1859), for which it received the battle honour ‘Central India’.

Chinnery worked in London as a miniaturist before travelling to India in 1802. He also visited Thailand and China. Apart from one brief visit to England he spent the rest of his life in the East and died in Macao in 1847.
