The Royal Hospital, Chelsea is a retirement and nursing home for soldiers who are no longer fit for duty because of injury or old age. It was established by Royal Warrant issued by Charles II in 1681. The building commission was given to Sir Christopher Wren and work was completed in 1692.

Over the years the conditions for eligibility have changed but in-pensioners are those who live at the Royal Hospital while, historically, out-pensioners were those who lodged outside but visited it twice a year to collect their pensions. This was because the Royal Hospital acted as the administrative centre for army pensions and was run as a garrison until the mid-nineteenth century.
