Crowds gathered on the shore watch while people set off in small boats, with Dutch flags, to join the fleet in the distance. It is not known exactly who is involved, and what the occasion is, but they must have been important! Although the painting was formerly known as ‘The Landing of William of Orange at Scheveningen’ by Ludolf Backhuysen, it seems that it depicts an embarkation rather than a landing. One suggestion is that it records William’s embarkation for England in 1641, while a smaller version held in the Neue Residenz at Bamberg is said to depict the embarkation of Charles II for England in 1660. The painting has now been attributed to Dubbels, probably in collaboration with Backhuysen, in whose studio he worked. The painting has hung at Brodsworth Hall since the house was built in the 1860s.
