The figure of the alchemist shown in thought, his head cast down, his left hand holding an instrument and his right hanging down holding a pair of bellows is identical in composition to the figure in a work in the Muséee des Beaux-Arts André Malraux, Le Havre. In the Le Havre work the alchemist is poking a fire with the instrument in his left hand.
