Amy Robsart is shown holding a miniature portrait of her husband Robert Dudley who was a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I. In 1560 Amy Robsart was found dead at the foot of the stairs and Dudley was rumoured to have murdered her.

It was four years after Amy’s death that Elizabeth made him Earl of Leicester, so the artist's title for this painting is slightly wrong. By this time one of Dudley's main residences was at Kenilworth Castle, just outside Coventry.
