Kay's Diploma Work appears to be part of a cycle of works inspired by the waterways in Amsterdam. In 1933 he exhibited a painting at the RSA Annual Exhibition 'Amsterdam, Holland', catalogue number 318, which depicted exactly the same stretch of canal as his Diploma Work with the same domed building visible in the distance.
