Edward Atkinson Hornel was born in Australia to Scottish parents, who returned to their native Kirkcudbright whilst Hornel was still a child. After an unsatisfactory period at Edinburgh art school, Hornel continued his studies at Antwerp Academy where he would have been exposed to the rustic naturalism associated with painting en plein air. Hornel became one of a group of artists known as the Glasgow Boys who experimented with Impressionist techniques. Other Glasgow Boys included John Lavery and George Henry. After a visit to Japan with George Henry in 1883–1884 he developed a more decorative style, using impasto (thickly applied paint) to create a patterned surface texture, as in this painting.
