In this painting, Mouly is not attempting to present us with a direct representation of the landscape that he encounters. He conveys the heat, light and forms of the Italian coast through an arrangement of forms and colours. With his use of areas of colour and black lines he breaks up the picture surface, leaving the sun (or is it the moon?) in the top, left corner as the only clue to our viewpoint.
