The piece is based on a kanga, a traditional cloth which is worn by women in the African Great Lakes region. Himid’s kangas are inspired by traditional Swahili sayings, but are invented by Himid herself. This kanga comes from a series which was made during a project at the Whitworth in 2011, where Himid explored the gallery’s East African textile collection alongside her own kanga collection.
