Two figures, each seated on projections from the entablature above pilasters flanking the main central door case. Speed, on the left, is shown riding on a winged chariot, most of which is concealed by her draperies. Her twisting posture and the dynamic opposition between the forward thrust of her bronze arrow and her billowing cape powerfully conveys the sense of velocity. Science, on the right, is positioned frontally in a more static pose, seated on a globe, encircled by a collar inscribed with signs of the Zodiac. In her right hand she holds a pair of dividers against the globe and her left hand grasps a lighted torch. Above the door, a broken pediment contains an image of the front of a locomotive, carved in realistic detail, including cross-section pieces of railway track under the wheels.
