A figure the Roman goddess of Literature, Minerva, stands atop the Library dome, holding an open book in her right hand. Affectionately named 'Mrs Mitchell', the statue was sculpted by Thomas John Clapperton to represent literature and learning.

The model was Teresa MacKenzie, who appeared as 'Britannia' on pennies and banknotes. The statue is greater than life-size.
