Born in 1964, Rupert Bathurst's creative work was primarily inspired by the 1980s. The generation of artists who grew up in and took inspiration from the 1980s was influenced by rapidly growing global capitalism, political upheaval, notable wealth differences, global mass media and distinctive music and fashion, including electronic pop music and hip hop. The hard labours inform Bathurst's work of observational life drawing, from which he departs whenever he wishes to be more highly spirited than traditional portraiture usually allows.
