Seymour Stokes Kirkup was born in London, the son of a diamond merchant. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1809 and became the friend of Blake and Haydon. In 1816 he visited Italy for health reasons, settling in Rome and Florence where he made portrait drawings of John Gibson and Joseph Severn. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1833 and 1836 from Florence and was present at the funerals of Keats and Shelley. He helped to discover Giotto's missing portrait of Dante in 1840 for which he was later made a Cavaliere of the Order of San Maurizio e Lazzaro. Owing to a misunderstanding he referred to himself as 'Baron' thereafter. He moved to Leghorn in 1872 and married a 22 year old Italian girl in 1875 (he was then aged 87). He died in Leghorn in 1880 and is buried in the British cemetery there.
