The Italian cellist Alfredo Piatti (1822–1901) is depicted when elderly with his hand resting affectionately on the head of his dog. Seated in a wooden armchair with a table covered with a red patterned cloth to the right, he holds an open illuminated musical manuscript in his left hand. Piatti, who taught at the Royal Academy of Music, settled in London in 1846 and played chamber music regularly with Joseph Joachim, Heinrich Ernst and Henryk Wieniawski. He also premièred Sir Arthur Sullivan's cello concerto at Crystal Palace. The first winner of the Piatti Prize at the Academy was the young cellist Giovanni Barbirolli (the conductor Sir John Barbirolli).
