The sitter was manager of the Stag Line, a North Shields shipping company founded by his grandfather in 1846. In the mid-1920s he was chairman of the North of England Steam Ship Owners Association and he also played a large role in public life as a Tynemouth town councillor, a JP and supporter of good causes. These included being treasurer of the Tynemouth war memorial committee, whose principal First World War commemoration project was to raise funds for the extension of the Tynemouth Victoria Jubilee Infirmary.
