Alfred J. Waley is depicted here seated in an armchair with his right hand resting on a walking cane. He wears a ring on his right little finger and a large fob chain. A distinguished member of the Royal Academy of Music's Committee of Management from 1914, he became Honorary Treasurer and then Chairman (1946–1953). In 1936 he was elected Master of the Worshipful Company of Musicians.
