Alexander 'Sandy' McLean Cowan was born in 1892 in Strathmiglo. The family soon moved back to his father's native town, Dollar, where Sandy attended Dollar Academy and then entered his father's grocery business, Drysdale & Co., in West Burnside. On his father's death he took over the shop, which he conducted with great efficiency. He married Christine Liddl Howden in 1926. A keen Freemason, he held office in many village organisations including the Golf Club, Burns Club, Curling, Music Society, Dollar Academy Club, Dollar Magazine Committee, Governors of Dollar Academy and the Town Council. He was elected Provost from 1946 to 1950. Sandy Cowan was presented with the Freedom of Dollar, the only person ever to have been given that honour. He died in 1970.
