Maurice Greiffenhagen was appointed as Professor of Life Classes, with responsibility for drawing, painting and composition, at the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) in 1906. He was also an illustrator and a well-respected portrait artist and having moved from London, Glasgow's artistic community provided him with new opportunities and he remained on the staff of GSA until 1928. The sitter in this painting was an architect and had been a student of the GSA. According to reports, McGibbon was a brilliant draughtsman and by 1890 had set up his own architectural practice in Glasgow. He combined his role of practitioner with that of teacher, joining the staff of the GSA shortly after and remaining at the school until his retirement in 1926. This painting was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014.
