A. J. B. Beresford-Hope (1820–1887) was a politician, author, editor, ecclesiologist, dilettante and patron of the Arts and of the Church. He was the second of the two non-architects elected Presidents of the Royal Institute of British Architects (1865–1867), the other being Earl de Grey in 1834. He was an important figure in the Ecclesiological Society and a leader of the Gothic Revival movement, becoming patron to a few of the Gothic Revival architects such as R. H. Carpenter and William Butterfield, funding a number of their buildings. He was also founder of All Saints, St Margaret Street, a trustee of the British Museum and MP for Maidstone. Furthermore, it is through Beresford-Hope's influence that the Institute was formally granted permission to use the prefix 'Royal' in 1866.
