The sitter was President of the Union in 1902, Fellow from 1906 to 1922, Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Glasgow from 1922 to 1924 and Master from 1924 to 1949. He became Vice-Chancellor in 1935 until 1938 and was an Honorary Fellow in 1949. He was the first Principal for the University College of North Staffordshire.
