A Greek hero rests on a rock which is covered in a fur or fleece. On his right arm is a shield with the head of a gorgon on it (most likely Medusa's). This implies the protection of the goddess Athena, who wore the gorgon's likeness on her aegis. The statue appears in the past to have had large areas of gold paint, which is now not visible. The label on the base suggests that this piece could have been exhibited.
