John Swaish was a Bristol pawnbroker who served as Lord Mayor for two years and was knighted in 1920. This portrait of him when Lord Mayor was painted by his son. The magnificent State Sword of 1752, made for the use of the mayor, is shown on the wall by the City's coat-of-arms. Frederick George Swaish was a fine portrait painter who had travelled widely on the Continent studying paintings. Unfortunately his health declined and he died very soon after his father.
