John Foster Spence was born in North Shields and lived his whole life in the town, becoming Mayor of Tynemouth twice. He and his brother Joseph (b.1819) were the proprietors of a shop in Howard Street, North Shields. As important civic figures, both brothers played a key role in helping to establish the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade in the 1860s. A Tyne tugboat was named after him. Spence's son-in-law Robert Clephan (1839–1922) was a noted authority on, and collector of, medieval armour.

The artist was born in Huddersfield in 1858, but spent most of his life in South Africa, where he was regarded as of importance in the art world. He painted many of the significant South African figures of the time, including Cecil Rhodes and Paul Kruger.
