When Japan overran South-east Asia during World War II, one of the prizes was access to resources not available in Japan itself. By 1945 the oil refineries around Palambang, Sumatra, were supplying roughly three-quarters of Japan's requirement for aviation fuel. In January 1945, the Fleet Air Arm mounted two raids against those installations and severely curtailed their output for the rest of the war. The raids involved the greatest number of aircarft used by the Fleet Air Arm on any operation of the war.
