George Barnard was the drawing master at Rugby School from 1843 to 1888 and was elected to the Alpine Club on artistic grounds. He was one of the first alpine artists to draw mountains with accuracy and form essential to good illustrative work. In 1865 he wrote 'Drawing from Nature: A series of progressive instructions in sketching with examples from Switzerland and the Pyrenees'.
