Nevinson was one of the key figures in modern British art before the First World War. Along with the Italian artist Filippo Marinetti, he published the Futurist Manifesto in 1914, glorifying war, the machine age, dynamism and speed. Nevinson used dramatic, near abstract compositional devices to express his vision. Something of that radical style is still visible in the sharp diagonals and stylised shapes of this painting. However, Futurism as an aesthetic force could not withstand the harsh reality of war and by the date of this work Nevinson had returned to more conventional methods of expressing his ideas.
