The artist said: 'I get an uncomfortable feeling when I look at the purple and orange Afro comb. I intentionally made the loops uneven, twisted and unregimented as these represent the small clumps of Afro hair growth around the hairline… the rounded handle of this gold and red knotted leather Afro comb reminds me of the knots Afro combs help to comb out… I have used black wool on black leather to show a canerow and Afro hairstyle. This was one of the hairstyles I wore last year'.
The work was created to be part of the 'Origins of the Afro Comb' exhibition at Bruce Castle Museum in 2013, in partnership with the Fitzwilliam Museum.
