Design for a plate to J. C. Lavater’s, ‘Essays on Physiognomy’, translated by Henry Hunter, London, 1789–1798, vol.III.ii., facing p.353. Lavater writes of this portrait, ‘the eyes of Cattenburg diffuse their rays.’ They also harbour a ‘slight infusion of pretension’, and ‘make advances’ rather than remaining self-concerned.
