The gift of a portrait of Beverland to the Ashmolean by the sitter is recorded in 1692 but this may have been a miniature. Comparison with a contemporary portrait print of Beverland, however, suggests that the sitter has been correctly identified. Dr Adriaan Beverland (1650–1712) was a Dutch lawyer and free thinker. He was in Leiden from 1673 to 1677 and then in Utrecht.
