This unfinished painting depicts acrobats at Tetouan, a city in northern Morocco. This richly colourful, bright and exotic painting was probably painted around 1860 when Spanish artist Fortuny y Carbó was sent to record the war with Morocco. It is therefore a rare early example of Fortuny's work which draws on earlier Spanish art – especially the paintings and etchings of Goya – and on contemporary foreign works, notably the paintings of the Italian Macchiaioli and those of the French artist Ernest Meissonier.
