This window was originally made for the 1965 Cheltenham Grammar School building, designed by Chamberlin Powell and Bon. Its brief was devised by the then headteacher Dr Arthur Bell, whose inspiration was based upon a passage from John Bunyan's 'The Pilgrim's Progress'. It was commissioned directly from the Royal College of Art. Dr Bell's budget was not generous and the RCA suggested – and used – the new technique of appliqué, instead of traditional leadwork. The window was renovated by Bristol Stained Glass when the 1965 building was demolished in 1996 and it’s now installed in the Junior Library of the current building. The timing of the Pate’s window means that it closely followed the RCA's magnificent work at Coventry Cathedral. Lawrence Lee – Head of the RCA Stained Glass Workshop – was one artist involved with Coventry and also had an input into the Pate's window.
