A student of Anne-Louis Girodet, Devéria was better known for his history paintings and portraits. He also had a keen interest in documenting regional and period costumes, however. This is demonstrated in this painting for the Salon of 1848 by the attention to detail in the richly coloured clothes and headdresses of the mother and child. Behind are the dramatic mountains of the Pyrenees to confirm the provincial locality.
