This is one of seven paintings which form a set representing The Seven Deadly Sins. They have been linked with a series of larger paintings on canvas, now divided between various collections, which have been attributed to the author of a painting of 'The Holy Family' in the Noordbrabants Museum in s'-Hertogenbosch signed 'JAD'. These initials have been associated with Jacques de l'Ange, a little known Flemish painter. The painting which relates to 'Avarice' (Gemäldegalerie, Kassel) is dated 1642.
