This section of a mural represents a yarn barton with its poles, support and snow-white burden. Three men are shown handling the yarn on the poles, a fourth is washing in the bleaching pool, while a fifth loads the wet yarn onto a barrow preparatory to wheeling it to be dried. The background is composed of the mill, built and formerly owned by Mr Stephen Whetham, a distinguished merchant and townsman and father of Mr Austen Whetham, a Town Clerk. In the background is Providence Cottage and on the left the tower of the parish church of St Mary’s breaks the line of the strung-out yarns.
